Memorial obelisk, dated 1862. Although the Queen had contemplated erecting an obelisk to Prince Albert herself, upon being told that the servants wished to do so she selected a design sketched by Beaton and requested that it be made by one of the Prince's servants and that Robertson select the site. It is a granite obelisk circa 24 feet (7 metres) high, sited on raised ground, and sits on a stepped dais and square, ashlar pedestal with a billetted cornice crowned by a Greek block pediment and acroteria to each face. There is a shield panel to one face of the pedestal, inscribed with a gilded dedication that reads: 'This obelisk was erected to the memory of His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Consort of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, by the Servants and Tenants upon the estates of Balmoral, Abergeldie and Birkhall, as an humble tribute to the affection of their beloved master, 1862'. It is the partner of the later obelisk to Queen Victoria (NO29SE0046).
