Details World War II airfield to the southwest of the airfield established at Edzell during World War I (NO67SW0110). During the 1930s a civilian airfield operated at Edzell to the west of the village. The airfield developed in 1940 became one of the satellites for No 8 Flying Training School based at Montrose and also served as an aircraft maintenance facility. No. 44 Maintenance Unit, formed in August 1940, had over 400 aircraft stored at Edzell at one time during the war. After the war the airfield was used by maintenance units between 1950 and 1957, and was put under Care and Maintenance in 1957. In the early 1960s it was handed over to the United States military for use as a communications centre, housing a small USAF detachment of 10th Radio Squadron Mobile from RAF Chicksands. It was a large radar and communications centre forming part of the US Navy global High Frequency Direction Finding network. The hub of the base was the large receiver building which had two levels below ground. The base closed in 1996. A number of hangars are still in existence and some dispersals and perimeter track still survive. The domestic site has been sold and the housing reused.
