Details Homestead moat, a good example which consisted of the usual ditch between two banks. The inner bank has been completely levelled, and the external bank only survives on the east where it is 3.65m wide but not more than 0.61m in height. The ditch measures up to 1.52m in depth on all four sides and was no doubt originally wet, although the farmer states that the lead-in and out-fall were cut in his youth when water was brought, by an open channel, via the moat to a dam near the farm (RCM 1957). There is no trace of an entrance or any internal buildings. In 1799 a gate was said to be visible very near the southwest corner. A 'steel spearhead' was found in the centre of the site. It had been attached to a long oaken shaft around which was an iron band bearing the word 'Agricola' (since lost).
