House, built in the 17th Century. The earlier building was probably a rectangular house of three storeys. There has been considerable alteration however, and even this may be an extension of a smaller late 16th Century tower-house. The present roof-level is obviously not original. A stair-turret is corbelled out above first-floor level in the centre of the north front, with very small windows or shot-holes filled in and harled over. The basement is not vaulted, the ceilings being very low. The original fireplace arch has been filled in and modernised. The building is now used as a farmhouse, originally being the mansion of a small estate. It has a number of 18th Century garden features with a walled terrace along the south facing slope 60m southwest of the house, and at either end is a 2-storeyed garden house, one of which is C-listed (NO78NE0046). A walled garden into the slope 110m north-northwest of the house has a chamfer. To the east of the house the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps also show two rectangular buildings but only the northern one remains. A building survey of the house and steading to the east was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in August 2015 prior to development. Three phases of development of the house were identified, and it is possible that this was originally built on a T-plan with tower on the east-northeast facade and two stair turrets. The tower was later reused as a main staircase, and an extension added in the 19th century. A watching brief on groundworks internally and for a new extension recorded no archaeological features or finds. The steading has since been demolished.
