Castle/house. The oldest part of the present house is an oblong block with two round towers projecting to the east of 15-16th century date. According to Tranter, the towers are of a courtyard type castle of early date, with some of the curtain walling still traceable. It was altered and enlarged in 1700 and in 1854 when the entire roof line and northern frontage was altered in pseudo-baronial style. It was held by the Melville family in the 13th century then passed to Sir Alexander Auchinleck in 1468 when he married a Melville heiress. Their daughter brought it to Sir William Douglas, a son of the Earl of Angus. The estate was sold by the Douglases to Robert Burnett of Leys. It remained in that family until 1721 when it was sold to a William Nicholson of Mergie. In 1831 an heiress of the family brought the estate into the hands the Badenach family who still own it.
