Details Village of Catterline (formerly known as Caterlyn, Caterlyne, and Katterline), is a small fishing village shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. An established fishing community may have existed here as early as the 14th Century, however it was during the 19th century that village expanded to its present size. The New Statistical Account of 1842, describing the village in the preceding years, notes that there were two boats and crews at this time, with around 20 families living in the village including the Coastguards. By 1881, at the height of the herring boom, eight herring boats plus 21 other boats or yawls are recorded as fishing out of Catterline. There followed a steady decline throughout the rest of the 19th and 20th Centuries, to the extent that between 1962 and 1991 only one motor yawl is recorded as fishing out of Catterline. The two, later three, rows of cottages including the coastguard station which are shown on the early OS maps survive and are still in use.
