Site of Friary. An unwitnessed charter (may not be genuine) records the foundation of the Carmelite Friary at Inverbervie by David II in 1358. In 1443, this house was said to have been 'recently established'. It appears to have been continued until the Reformation and on 15 October 1570, a grant was made of the lands and other properties formerly belonging to the friars. The discovery of graves while road-making caused conjecture that these graves marked the friar's burying-ground. Amongst the priors were Christianus Bryssone (20 November 1487), James Howysone 1480, John Lyndsay 1539. Some confusion seems to arise at mention of a second friary at NO 8322 7277, but this may refer to same friary. The OS Name Book (1864) stated that it is supposed that the monastery stood on the site of the parochial school (NO 83118 72761) although no part of the buildings remains. The OS 1st and 2nd edition maps depict 'Supposed Site of Monastery (Carmelite)' at this location. Trial excavation at Friars Dubbs in 1999 (NO87SW0119) found some daub and 13th-15th century pottery. A wall plaque was situated near the Cutty Sark memorial (NO87SW0121), on Cowgate, commemorating the supposed site of a Carmelite friary. Erected in 1993, it has since been removed.
