A Roman coin hoard of denarii, ranging from Vespasian (69 AD) to Septimus Severus (211 AD) were found about circa 9 cm below ground surface in a bog in 1843. It appeared as if they had been enclosed in an earthen vessel, although no trace of this was found. NMAS received three coins in 1846 and A S Robertson believes that three in the British Museum, registered as having come from 'Blackburn of Muchall' (possibly Backburn), are also part of this hoard.
