Details Site of battle. Hill of Muchalls was the site of a skirmish during the Civil War between Covenanting and Royalist armies in June 1639. After occupying Aberdeen the Royalist army marched on Stonehaven and camped on Muchalls. The approximate area of this battlefield is shown on Roy's Military Survey of Scotland 1747-1755. Ditches and embankments, allegedly military, extended all over the Hill of Muchalls before it was brought into cultivation about 1860. No trace of these features was identified during a walkover survey undertaken for the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. A metal detecting survey including this area was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 (NO89SE0093).
