Hotel attributed to Peter Fulton, architect (Forres), dated 1900. Three-storey and attic, 3-bay frontage to High Street with curved angle bay to corner of High Street/Caroline Street with entrance. Bullfaced rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and harled west gable. There are two shop fronts in ground floor. Canted oriel windows in first floor outer bays with wallhead balconies fronting substantial 4-light mullioned round-headed windows in second floor. Similar fenestration in angled bay but with tripartite in second floor. Two shaped finialled gablets to High Street frontage supported by large scroll brackets. Finialled leaded dome crowns angle wallhead, end stacks and slate roof. Modern shop fronts to two shops in ground floor, High Street frontage. Carlton Hotel constructed on site of former Plough Inn, subsequently named The Plough Inn. This was the name of the 1900 hotel until 1930 when it was re-named The Carlton Hotel.
