Details Distillery, founded in 1824. It is a handsome group of mainly rubble buildings of which the bonded stores are, unusually, mostly 3-storey. There is also a fine 3-storey, 10-bay range of maltings with a single kiln. Also known as Cardow Distillery. The distillery was founded in 1811 as an 'illicit distillery' before gaining its licence in 1824. Unusually, the distillery was first operated by two generations of female distillers, Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth. Cardhu was purchased by Johnnie Walker and Sons in 1893, the first distillery to be purchased by the brand. Photographic recording of the bonded warehouse was carried out in 2019 prior to upgrading of distillery visitor facilities.
