Details Cropmark of a rectilinear enclosure. Aerial survey in the early 1980s recorded three sides of a rectangular ditched enclosure located on an eroded spur. Excavations were carried out in 1982 and between 1985 and 1990 to clarify the function and date of the enclosure. This identified three main phases of activity on the site. The first is represented by a slight, sand filled ditch running northwest - southeast. The next phase saw construction of the large rectangular ditched enclosure visible on aerial photographs. Excavation recorded the V-shaped ditch all four sides but no direct dating evidence was recovered. Interpretation as a Roman military work is based in its siting and plan. A final phased of activity is evidence by numerous pits across the spur. There are also possible cropmarks to the south including a possible souterrain.
