Details Spynie Canal was built between 1808-1811 to a plan by Thomas Telford, and travels 6 miles (10km) from the site of Spynie Loch to Seatown at lossiemouth. The contractor who undertook the work, a Mr Hughes, had previously worked on the Caledonian Canal. The creation of the Canal allowed the once extensive Spynie Loch to be drained and the resulting dry area made availble for agriculture. The Canal was damaged by inundation during the Great Flood of 1829, but was later repaired with dykes thrown up along the canal's banks.
