Details Supposed site of Greyfriars monastery, the site said to be the land later occupied by Dunfermline Cottage. There is a circa 1281 mention of Franciscan friars minor conventual receiving lands for upkeep of their house beside the Cathedral. The monastery is said to have moved to its current location (NJ26SW0011) circa 1479, so this may represent the earlier site. Photograph shows possible remains. Monitoring of contractors' excavations by I Keillar in 1967 recorded a vaulted cellar on the site, possibly part of Dunfermline Cottage or the friary. Three trenches were excavated on the site in 1989 by SUAT (with a further four to the east - see NJ26SW0112). A limited amount of medieval activity was indicated by some shallow features and relatively small amount of medieval pottery. The base of a 19th century wall was uncovered and a large amount of 19th century pottery recovered, but there was no evidence of friary building (DES 1989:24). In 1990, a partly demolished cellar with vaulted roof was found while grading for a new development. It was probably associated with the early 19th century residence, Dunfermline Cottage, and there was no evidence of friary building (DES 1990:21). There are references to a a stone dovecote which stood until the 19th century.
