Details Trial trenching (1976) and excavation (1977) carried out in advance of the relief road recorded a Medieval site, including remains relating to the medieval property layout and backland usage. The investigation in 1976 revealed a series of medieval pits. Artefacts recovered include 13th-14th century pottery, animal and fish bones, shells and metalworking debris (charcoal, slag, crucible and mould fragments). The subsequent excavation of an area that was completely waterlogged recorded a series of four property boundary fences dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries, and 30 cess pits of similar date containing well preserved environmental evidence. A 14th century oak barrel well was found intact as was a 16th century soakaway. Some pits had wattle linings and timbered bases, Two small glass beads came from bottom of a pit. A layout of 18th and 19th century agricultural trenches extended across most of the investigated area.
