Details Ruins of the 16th century Eastern gateway or port to the Elgin Cathedral (NJ26SW0001) precincts. It was of considerable height, and the pend was provided with a portcullis as well as massive oak doors, and there is the portcullis slot still in the arch. Only the pointed entrance arch survives, and it was restored in 1857. It is constructed from rubble, with ashlar copes to the crow-stepped wallhead, and there are arrow slits to the East. One of the sections of Precinct wall (NJ26SW0079) joins to the South. Also known as the Water Gate.
