Details A hoard of flat bronze axes which had been suggested to have been found at or near Ladyhill, in Elgin. The objects were donated to Elgin Museum ( in 1868) by James Fletcher of Rosehaugh (a house on the Black Isle). Coles (1969) had noted the discover as being 'near Ladyhill, Avoch' and given that OS cite no such place-name near Avoch it had been suggested that they had been found in the Ladyhill District of Elgin. However, Elgin Museum accession books record that they were found in trenching in a moss near the ruins of Castle of Avoch, Ross and Cromarty (Highland). Schmidt and Burgess describe the hoard as consisting of 5 Migdale-type bronze flat axes.
