The Old town of Cullen commenced from near the Castle Hill and extended in one long street to near the Old Mill, the church being near the middle of the town. Beside the church was the school, the Townhouse, the Tollbooth, the market-cross and close by was the manse. Town of Invercullen was mentioned as far back as 1198-9. It was burnt down in May 1645 by Montrose's army. In the early 19th century the then Laird, fifth Earl of Seafield, began the process of moving the town away from his house and building the new town on the coast. The core of Old Cullen House (NJ56NW0360) is the only surviving dwelling from the town.
