The new station at Burghead was opened in 1893 by the Highland Railway, when it was decided to extend the line from Burghead to Hopeman. It superseded the old station, which was near the harbour. The station was a single- platform through station with a 1-storey wooden building with an awning supported on cast-iron columns. It closed to passengers in 1931 with freight continuing longer. The branch line to Hopeman finally closed 31 December 1957. The Burghead to Burghead harbour closed on 7 October 1966. The station building and platform are still standing and the building was converted to offices circa 1980. The station is one of the few remaining, unspoilt Victorian wooden and iron stations in Scotland. In 2010, the station buildings are no longer depicted on the OS maps.
