Details The arc of an enclosure was visible as a cropmark in 1981, around the graveyard at Birnie Kirk (NJ25NW0001). This probably represents an earlier use of the kirk site in both the prehistoric and early medieval period. In January 2001 three small trenches were excavated in the gap between the modern church yard wall and the fence, but no trace of an earlier enclosure was found. Trial trenching in 2009 and 2010 the field south of the church (see also NJ25NW0029) as part of the ongoing Birnie excavations recorded a possible boundary ditch of the early church.
