Established 1224; damaged in fire 1270; destruction by Wolf of Badenoch 1390; reconstruction work took place throughout the 15th century; chanonry plundered in 1402; ribbed vaulting added c.1482-1501; chapter house built in 1482-1501; central tower collapse 1506; central tower rebuilt 1538; 'Bloody Vespers' entanglement between the two clans of Innes and Dunbar in the cathedral 1555; Reformation destruction 1568; mass said in roofless cathdral in 1594; storm blew down rafters in 1637; painted rood screen destroyed in 1640; collapse of mid tower 1711; 1807 government took responsibility for the ruins, which is when the enclosing wall was built. Various watching briefs and excavations have taken place throughout the 20th century, mainly in response to maintenance work done on the site. Listed designation given on 26/01/1971.
