Details Several artefacts were found in a cist by a gamekeeper while digging in a sandpit in 1898. The Roman finds included 12 possible 3rd-4th century AD gaming pieces (6 of quartzite, 4 of dark blue glass and 2 of mosaic glass), a globular studded bronze cup and a silver penannular brooch. Other silver artefacts were thought to have been found in the same sandhole a year later and removed, however there is now no trace of them. Finds are in the National Museum Scotland under access No's EQ278-292. Some time after the first discovery a cast bronze miniature cauldron of Santon type (Belgic affinities), probably 2nd century AD., was found in the same sand-pit. It contained a human tooth: twelve quartzite pebbles were also found.
