A seaport, created a burgh of barony holding of Sir Walter Ogilvie of Boyne in 1555, with its first harbour built soon after this. Trading and fishing port. The 19th century herring boom brought much prosperity to Portsoy. At its peak the herring fleet totalled 57 boats. The Earl of Seafiled built the 'New Harbour' in 1825. In 1839, during violent storms, the harbour was extensively damaged, but re-building not completed until 1884. Towards the end of the 19th century the fishing fleet moved to larger harbours at Macduff and Buckie. Formerly the terminus of the Grange and Portsoy branch of the Great North of Scotland railway, later one of the chief stations on the loop line after its construction in 1885. On the south side of the town is Loch Soy.
