Period Notes

Burgh created in 1550 (site details tab says 1555 which doesn't match up). Greater buildings clustered round the harbour are 17thC or early 18thC. 'New Harbour’ in 1825. 1839 harbour damaged in storm; re-building not completed until 1884. 19thC herring boom brought prosperity to Portsoy. Upper town created in 19thC. Towards the end of the 19thC the fishing fleet moved to larger harbours at Macduff and Buckie.
