Details A watching brief was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June 2022 during groundworks associated with conversion of the Glasshaugh windmill (NJ56NE0002) into a dwelling. A second watching brief was maintained in May 2023 during excavation for services. Two small groups of features were located in Trench 1 along the access driveway: two small pits or postholes in the southern half of the trench and a cluster of three features in the northern half). These were covered with protective membrane and retained in situ. Trench 2 exposed the foundations of the windmill. Within the interior of the windmill, Trench 5 revealed a distinct stratigraphy although unclear if this is archaeological, possibly relating to the cairn beneath. Remains of fires yielded pieces of 20th century bottles. Two wooden stakes on the east side of the interior may relate to themachinery or internal structure of the mill. A single posthole was located and excavated but this yielded no artefacts.
