A programme of archaeological investigation was carried out by University of Aberdeen in 2013 as part of the Northern Picts Project in this field which contained the site of stone circles (NJ56SW0008 and NJ56SW0009) and a hoard (NJ56SW0026). Geophysical survey revealed little, and was followed by metal detecting which recovered a silver a strap-end, part of a bracelet, three late Roman siliquae coins of 4th-5th century AD date and pieces of folded hacksilver. A large trench was excavated over the greatest concentration of finds, but demonstrated that all of the finds were in the modern ploughsoil. A smaller trench (area B) was opened at the recorded location of the last standing stone of the northern stone circle. A small number of features were identified during the excavations, none that can be directly linked to the finds. Boulders in area B may have been part of the ring cairn of the stone circle: a number of lithics were also found and a few prehistoric features, one dating to the later Neolithic, another to the Middle Bronze Age. Subsequent further detecting produced 14 additional finds, all within the topsoil. An additional trench was opened in September 2014 but produced no finds or features of significance.
