Details Large harled mansion house, of various periods. Principally a 16th Century L-plan hall-house, though original part is probably 15th Century recast in the 16th Century. The earliest phase was apparently a three-storey L-plan tower with a circular stair tower in the re-entrant. A large wing was added west of the tower in the 18th century, with a south facing central entrance. The buttresses at the back were added in the mid 18th Century. The west wing was originally a plain 2-storey and basement structure. Back wing with squared stone bow, dating from circa 1800, when the circular tower was heightened. Large phase of reconstruction carried out by John Smith in 1840, reusing material from the walled garden (NJ60NE0082). The old house was doubled to form approximate symmetrical U-plan section with centre gable, and the interior was almost completely remodelled. The date of the ling north wing is not recorded. Extensively restored in 1954-5. A standing building survey of the rear (north) wing was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in March 2021 ahead of proposed refurbishment. Although there is no record of when this was added, it clearly post dates the late 18th century buttresses, and was added by the mid 19th century when the OS 1st edition map was surveyed. It may have been part of the 1840 reconstruction and appears to have always been a service wing. It is constructed of roughly dressed rubble stone, with patchy harling, with a slate roof and crowstepped gable. There are two chimneys, both of granite. Few internal details survive but one room was formerly a laundry, photographs from 2011 showing belfast sinks and boilers. The first floor rooms included at least two servants' bedrooms.
