Details Village of Old Rayne, a burgh of barony from the 17th century when the market cross (NJ62NE0016) was erected. The Bishops of Aberdeen had a residence here (NJ62NW0002) although nothing remained by the mid 19th century. As depicted on the OS 1st edition map the village includes a smithy, post-office, school, congregational preaching station and corn mill (NJ62NE0144). By the time of the 2nd edition the Union Hall had been added and a new school built.
