Distillery, founded in 1826, one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland and by the 1860s was the largest duty paying distillery in the Scottish Highlands. It has floor maltings and coal-fired stills. It was subsequently bought in 1920 by Captain Charles Grant (son of the founder of the Glenfiddich distillery) and then acquired by Teachers in 1960. William Teacher was a wine and spirit merchant during the 19th century, noted for blended whiskies. In the early days of branding, his company was amongst those who developed well-known labels. Teachers and Sons increased the number of stills from two to four. It became part of Allied Distillers in 1976 and production was suspended in 1996 but it was brought out of mothballs in 2001. Now owned by Allied Distilleries. There is a B-listed 18th century house that is now within the group of distillery buildings (NJ64SW0060). Other buildings within the complex include a former steading.
