Details A watching brief was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services between February and May 2015 during driveway repairs including excavation of drainage trenches. To the north of the castle drainage trench 3 cut across the basal foundations of a substantial stone wall running north-south. A single sherd of medieval or post-medieval pottery was found in a disturbed layer. East of the castle was an early drain sump formed of a red brick surround. Dressed granite slabs and an iron grill found in the overlying disturbed ground had probably been displaced from the sump. Material found in drainage trench 1 on the north side of the drive east of the castle suggest considerable levelling on this part of the driveway during or since the 19th century. No archaeological evidence was found in drainage trench 2 which cut the field on the northeast side of the drive. No archaeological features or finds were recorded in the car park area.
