Details A watching brief was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in March - April 2023 during groundworks (comprising nine foundation trenches) for an extension and new garage, the site located close to a prehistoric burial mound (NJ72SE0019). Sections of a large silt-filled ditch observed in several trenches are believed to be a continuation of the ditch surrounding the hillock and which was observed during an evaluation in 1994. It would appear that the ditch extends under most of the garden of this property. Radiocarbon dating of samples from the ditch fills gave medieval dates. Post excavation research findings concluded that the ditch was excavated around Conyng Hillock which remained open for a prolonged period before being filled between 11th and 15th centuries AD.
