A watching brief was undertaken by Cameron Archaeology on September 26th 2016, during a topsoil strip of Trench 6, a 140m section of the cable corridor, 1.6m in width, following on from a walkover survey ahead of cable laying for SSE (NJ62NE0181). The trench ran through the northern side of an area of cropmarks of possible ring-ditches (NJ72SW0058). The topsoil depth varied between 0.18m and 0.30m and was typically overlying a dark brown, very compact silty clay subsoil with gritty inclusions. There was an intermittent change to a light orangish-brown, gritty clay subsoil, interspersed with mid to light-grey, gley concentrations of almost pure clay in areas of apparent standing water, towards the eastern extent of the trench. In this area, at the boundary change from a gley to the dark brown subsoil, a robust field drain was located. This ran roughly from north to south, and contained 19th century ceramic and glass within the stones. The drain was closely inspected and the trench widened by an additional 1.6m, which revealed modern glass and ceramic within the stone fill. No other archaeological finds or features were noted within the trench corridor.
