A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was carried out by Alder Archaeology in September 2019 in advance of works to remove man-made embankments and other obstacles to improve water quality. Various features were identified from documentary sources, many of them no longer extant. Extant features include a bridge at the west end, Den of Maidencraig (NJ8915206429) of modern concrete construction with pointed stone rubble revetments possibly reused from an earlier bridge. Various boundaries of post-medieval date, and lengths of burns/water channels were noted on documentary sources, for most of which no visible remains were recorded during the walkover.
