Monument erected in 1614 by the magistrates in memory of Dr Duncan Liddell, Professor of Mathematics and of Medicine at the University of Helmstadt (1591 - 1607). Dr Liddell purchased the estate of Pitmedden shortly after 1612. It is a square ashlar monument, 20 feet (5.5m) tall, the upper part with inscription 'AETERNAE MEMORIAE DOMINI DUNCAN LIDELLI MDCIV ABD MONUMENTUM HOC AEDIFICARI-CURAVIT SENATUS ABREDONENSIS A DO 1637' (which records that the monument was erected to the Eternal memory of the Lord Duncan Liddell in 1637 by the senate (people) of Aberdeen) and armorial panels, with a pyramid top and finial. It bears the dates of 1614 and 1637.
