Remains of a designed landscape of Straloch House (NJ82SE0012) covering around 50ha, dating back to the 1700s, comprising early to mid 18th century enclosure landscape with a parkland landscape developed in the mid to later 19th century with the assistance of the artists James Giles. Underlying morphology dictated the conditions of the landscape. There is high ground with no panoramic views, due to the woodland plantations. The grounds have been laid out to enclose parkland with views from the house to large trees within the parkland. During the landscaping a loch was drained to the south-west of the house. This may be represented by the 30 ha of parkland with clumps of mature trees which is known as the 'Front Field'. The long drive leads to Newmachar and is known as 'Dorset Drive'. The burn has been canalised and incorporates a series of shallow waterfalls. The Holy Well and Walled Garden are other elements of the policies. The well had an arbour in the late 19th century, but is now represented by a stone surround with step. The Walled Garden is by MacKenzie in 1753-4 (NJ82SE0092). The estate is much older, the earliest written record a charter of circa 1348 in which King David II granted to Henry le Chen, 2nd of Straloch, a yearly payment of forty shillings sterling, from the lands of Straloch and Achtukis. The ownership by the Cheyne family is probably even older, to the time of Francis le Chen, 1st of Straloch, (circa 1275).
