Gasworks founded in 1840, acquired by Aberdeen Corporation in 1871, and depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. It included a large vertical retort works. The gas works was originally built on Guild Street in 1824 and was known as the 'New Light and Gas Company' but was later moved to Cotton Street in 1844. Ordnance Survey maps indicate that the gas works were growing larger as only one gasometer with four smaller ones were identified in 1867-9. By 1900-3 and 1925-6, three large gasometers were visible and the four smaller ones had been dismantled to make way for larger office/workspace. At the Cotton Street works, they received a large cast iron eagle in the 1920s and it was displayed outside their offices. The eagle, or mascot of the gas works, was transported to the Gas works site on Miller Street sometime in the early 1970s. The large vertical-retort works were closed in 1972 and were largely dismantled, although at that time two old holders with cast-iron guides remained together with an exhauster house with two horizontal steam engines, preserved by the Scottish Gas Board. Gasometers survived until at least 1996 but were demolished prior to 2001.
