Concrete breakwater constructed between 1869 and 1874, depicted on the OS 2nd edition map. It superseded an earlier breakwater constructed before 1840 (NJ90NE0023). The new breakwater was 320m long with a tall concrete lighthouse at its north end. It was intended to improve the harbour by sheltering the navigation channel from easterly weather. Constructed of concrete, within a couple of years of completion blocks exposed to the sea had begun to break away and repairs were carried out in 1886-92. A gale in 1937 tore a 30m (100ft) gap in the structure. Repair work started in 1938 was halted by World War II and did not resume until 1954, widening and repairs finally being completed in 1965.
