Stone memorial to John Abercrombie (1729-1820). Abercrombie was a descendant of the house of Birkenbog. He started his career as a stocking manufacturer in Aberdeen and became Lord Provost of the city in 1787. After the construction of the first stage of the North Pier in 1781, it was found that the pier caused strong swells to arise in the harbour and consequently John Smeaton, who had planned the first stage of the North Pier, advised the erection of a catch pier to deal with the problem. The resulting pier (NJ90NE0203) was named for Provost Abercrombie and his name, office and date were carved into one of the stones. Most of the pier has been removed, although fortunately this stately, if somewhat inaccessible stone remains.
