Plaque commemorating David Grant, composer, who lived between 1833 and 1893. It is fixed to the front wall of St. Clement's church (NJ90NE0017). As a member of St. Clement's Church, Footdee, he scored parts for instrumental bands and arranged tunes for the Northern Psalter. He is attributed with writing the harmony for the hymn tune Crimond (The Lord is my Shepherd). This is a slightly controversial point however. It has been suggested that the arrangement had been written by Jessie Seymour Irvine (1836-1889). This claim was written in a letter, dated 31 May 1911, by Anna Barbara Irvine, sister to Jessie. However, claims were subsequently made in favour of Grant and Fenton Wyness writing about this incident in the 1970s does not seem to have accepted the case that the work was not that of Grant. This is part of a series of plaques administered by Aberdeen City Council. It is, unfortunately, not known when or by whom this plaque was erected although its style may suggest that it dates from the mid twentieth century.
