Details Site of a pier, depicted on the OS 1st edition map. This pier was planned in 1607 and was to be financed with money and voluntary labour. The scheme was subject to several delays and difficulties, despite a tax of £4 per tun on all imports of wine to help finance the operation. In 1611-12 James Mackeane was recorded as the master mason of the bulwark. In 1649-50 it was extended by some ten foot of length, at a cost of £18 6s 8d Scots, at which time 16s were expended in additional repairs to the bulwark. Considerable rebuilding work was carried out at the pier between 9 May and 8 September 1670, at a substantial cost of well over £1400 Scots. The pier itself survived through until the 19th century, albeit it in much altered form.
