Canal bridge and remains of section of canal, between the crossroads of Great Northern Road and Western Road, and the junction at Western Road and Don Street. The section of canal survives as a substantial linear gulley circa 140 m long with a steep bank on the south side, lower on the north, with a bridge towards the west end of this section. The bridge has a maximum arch span of 4.4 m. it is built of large granite blocks and terminates in 3 m high granite pillars at each end, these obscured by later remodelling of the bridge. The bridge carried traffic from the south end of Station Road over the canal to Woodside Mills. Later the bridge gave access to Woodside Railway Station until its closure in 1937. The bridge continued to be in use, and today takes traffic from Station Road over to Great Northern Road. This canal bridge is registered as a Scheduled Monument. The Aberdeenshire canal (see NJ81SE0535) ran for 18.5 miles from Waterloo Quay to Port Elphinstone, between 1805 and 1854. Some of the 56 road bridges along the route were so near the water level that the horses that pulled the barge had to be detached and hooked on again after the boat had passed under the bridge. When the canal was bought by the Great North of Scotland Railway much of the canal route was redeveloped for the railway line.
