Former Old Town School, built 1840-1, designed by John Smith. Shown on the OS 1st edition map named Town's School. The school was on an E-plan in late Greek revival style. A pedimented Greek Doric tetrastyle central portico is flanked by very advance single bay pavilions. Built of grey granite ashlar with fine tooled dressings, pilastered at the corners, with a grey slate roof and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a wide band course, projecting cornice and coped blocking course above. The other elevations are of squared, coursed rubble construction. The principal, south, elevation has multi-pane glazing in timber framed windows. There is a later low ashlar boundary wall to the South with regularly spaced pyramidal piers and railings. It was converted to a public house 1996-7, and the rear of the building incorporated into the Academy shopping and restaurant complex in 1998.
