One of two cast iron ventilator shafts standing on the south side of Hutcheon Street, Aberdeen, comprising a hollow cast-iron standard with a open crowned top (see also NJ90NW0088). They were manufactured by W MacFarlane and Sons of Glasgow around the year 1900. They are probably for ventilating the tunnel where trains sat below at the former Hutcheon Street station. The Denburn Line of the Great North Railway line from the Joint Station, Guild Street to Kittybrewster was opened on 4 November 1867, linking Aberdeen with Inverness. The line took longer to complete than expected. Part of the roof of the tunnel (which is 270 yards long) under these ventilators collapsed during the construction of this new line, causing added expense and a longer period of time for the development.
