Former Lunatic Asylum established in 1862 to relieve the problem of overcrowding at the Aberdeen Lunatic Asylum (Royal Cornhill Hospital - NJ90NW1195), and intended to be for the care of private patients able to pay a guinea a week or more. Designed by William Ramage in Italian villa style, it is on an E-plan, the original hospital is 3-storey with basement, of 13 bays, built of tooled coursed granite finely finished to the margins. It was set in pleasure grounds laid out with terraces and drives. The 2nd edition OS map shows another building to the south. The hospital was remodelled and Elmhill House converted in the 1930s to a nurses' home. Elmhill House was severely damaged by bombing in World War II. The principal (southeast) elevation as a near-symmetrical 3-bay gabled entrance block stepped forward.
