Site of military infantry barracks, depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps, built on the site of the earlier Cromwellian Fort (see NJ90NW0208). In 1776 the Council agreed to consider providing military barracks on Castlehill but it was not until 179204 when the council presented to the Government the whole area of Castlehill within the rampart for the purpose of the projected barracks. The barracks were erected 1794-6 designed to accommodate a garrison of 600 men in response to the perceived threat from France. A streetplan of 1807 shows that it incorporated the southeast bastion of the earlier fort, the bastion being surrounded by the barrack's magazine. The barracks was used by the Gordon Highlanders until 1935. They were demolished in 1965 and housing now stands on the site.
