Building dating from shortly before 1797, built for Gordon Baron and Co, originally as a dormitory for calico apprentices at Woodside Works. Constructed in the style of a medieval fortress it became known as 'The Barracks' and later as 'Persley Castle'. It is 2-storey, built of squared rubble the end bays advanced with pepper pot turrets, There is a 3-storey crenellated centre tower with a 4-centred arch. It was later the HQ of NE River Purification Board, now a nursing home. The Roy Military Map (1747-52) shows a copper mill in this area.
