Former female orphan asylum, depicted on the OS 1st edition map, later a Girls High School (as shown on the 2nd edition OS map) and used as the 1st Scottish General Hospital in World War I. Now Harlaw Academy. The central block was designed by Archibald Simpson 1837-40, for Mrs Emslie a widow who put aside £40,000 for the construction and endowment of a hospital for orphans and destitute girls. It was opened on 19th November 1840. There were additions to the south by WJ Smith and Kelly in 1892, and a south wing and links to the earlier (circa 1830) flanking pavilions by JAO Allan in 1902. There have since been further additions and alterations. During World War I the building of the then Girls High School was incorporated into the 1st Scottish General Hospital, one of four Territorial Force military hospitals established in WWI in Scotland The hospital provided beds for 34 officers and 1,385 other ranks. A plaque on Nos. 18-20 commemorates the poet, author and journalist Rachel Annand Taylor (1876-1960) who taught here.
