Details An archaeological watching brief was maintained at 19 Old Castle, Slains in 2007 by MAS during a soil strip prior to an extension being built. The site lies within the Scheduled Monument area of Old Slains Castle (NK03SE0002). During the excavations, 28 sherds of medieval pottery were recovered, all of a red fabric with olive-green glaze, probably local pottery, dating from the 13th to early 14th centuries. No structural features were noted. An archaeological watching brief was subsequently maintained in June 2007 by MAS during the installation of an underground electric cable to 19 Old Castle. The trenches lay 200m to the west of the last surviving ruins of Old Slains Castle, but no clear archaeological finds or features were evident although the presence of some stone rubble and earth may indicate attempts to consolidate the top of the steep slope near the rampart.
