Period Notes

First recorded in 1220; became a Royal Burgh in 1564; badly silted by 1654; 1720 storm sealed the river from the sea, creating the Loch of Strathbeg; burgh's Bartholomew Fair continued to be held until 1869. Only one house remained by1888. RC dates: GU-2719 from charcoal from the collapsed fence of a field system 3130 BP (Err: 50) - 1520-1260 cal BC
