Cottage, depicted on the later historic OS maps, as L-plan with projections from the east elevation and the north gable, with a garden enclosure. An earlier rectangular cottage is depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps located to the northeast of the later cottage, with a garden enclosure shown to the southwest by the time of the 2nd edition map, where the current cottage is located. Located within the Tomintoul fermtoun group of buildings (NO19NW0004). During the 20th century the cottage was associated with the poet and writer Nan Shepherd, who would frequently visit the property after she first saw it in 1928, and it later became known as Nan Shepherd's Howff. Braeview is reported to have been built in 1926 by James McGregor for himself and his wife. James McGregor had grown up at the neighbouring property, Downie’s Cottage (NO19SW0057).
